A vacancy exists in the Department of Public Works, Bureau of Solid Waste.

Job Description

Under general supervision, performs specialized clerical work in support of a maintenance shop. Examples of essential duties include:

  • Keeping, updating, and maintaining the facility office and personnel records including time sheets, payroll, and attendance.
  • Updating and maintaining records of materials, supplies, and equipment used by the facility. Preparing and compiling reports of material and equipment usage and job costs.
  • Keeping records of operation and maintenance costs for the facility vehicles and equipment. Maintaining inventory of equipment parts and scheduling maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Preparing and processing requisitions for materials and supplies. Maintaining petty cash fund and making purchases as needed.
  • Receiving, logging, and responding to telephone inquiries, complaints, and requests for service.
  • Operating office machinery such as mimeograph machines, photocopiers, fax machines, and calculators.
  • Monitoring alarm systems and dispatching crews to respond to calls for service and emergencies.

Performs occasional light typing or word processing, and codes, enters, and retrieves information using data entry devices. Operates small yard equipment to load, unload, or move materials and supplies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate high school equivalency PLUS one year of general clerical experience. (Additional experience as described in the essential duties may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education. Additional education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.)

Knowledge, skills, and abilities (entry level): Knowledge of office procedures and filing systems. Skill in operation of office machinery as listed in essential duties. Ability to communicate orally. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and documents. Ability to answer routine inquiries and to properly direct visitors, mail, or telephone calls. Ability to maintain files. Ability to follow County and Department rules and regulations. Ability to learn automated office systems. Ability to follow directions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to concentrate on tasks in a distracting environment. Ability to operate yard equipment.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities (full performance): Knowledge of County rules and departmental regulations and procedures. Ability to process information according to established guidelines. Ability to operate automated office systems. Ability to effectively deal with the public.

Conditions of Employment

The work among positions in this class varies, but most often involves frequent walking and standing, and some lifting and carrying of objects of moderate to heavy weight. Some duties involve exposure to adverse weather conditions. The work of this classification is essentially sedentary. Some positions may involve occasional travel between work sites. Applicants selected for an appointment to a position in Baltimore County must successfully complete an employment background investigation, including, but not limited to a criminal background, education, and fingerprint check.

Salary: Annual salary review - step increases may be granted on anniversary date based on satisfactory job performance. General increases - cost of living increases and adjustments may be granted as legislated. Longevity increases - in accordance with the specific pay schedule, a full-time merit or classified employee may receive a longevity increase, equivalent to one step, upon completion of a certain number of years of classified service with the County.
